Specifications, compatibility and ordering information

The 1x2 SC/APC Single-Mode FBT Fiber Coupler divides one optical input into two output branches using fused biconical taper technology. The connectorized configuration provides one input and two SC/APC output connections, making it suitable for optical systems that require either equal or intentionally unequal power distribution between two fiber paths. Unlike a fixed equal-ratio splitter, the finished coupler can be specified around the power allocation required by the optical design, with 50/50, 60/40, 70/30 and 80/20 representing common project configurations.

Selection should begin with the required coupling ratio and operating wavelength, followed by the single-mode fiber specification, SC/APC interface and pigtail construction. These parameters define the optical configuration more clearly than the 1x2 port count alone. A 50/50 version divides the available optical power approximately equally between both branches, while 60/40, 70/30 and 80/20 configurations progressively direct a larger share toward one branch. The correct ratio should therefore be based on the link design and optical power requirement rather than selected only by application name.

For project and quantity orders, provide the required coupling ratio, operating wavelength, connector configuration, pigtail length and construction, together with any insertion-loss, return-loss, directivity or other optical acceptance limits already defined by the project. The higher-power and lower-power output branches should also be clearly identified when an unequal ratio is specified. Defining these items before quotation gives the supplier a complete optical configuration to manufacture against and gives the buyer a clearer basis for incoming inspection, installation and future replenishment of the same coupler specification.

1x2 FBT Coupling Ratio Options

The coupling ratio determines how optical power is allocated between the two output branches. The ratios below represent common 1x2 FBT configurations; the required ratio should be selected from the optical power budget and branch requirements of the actual system.

Coupling RatioPower DistributionSelection Direction
50/50Equal distribution between both branchesFor links where both outputs require approximately the same share of optical power.
60/40Moderately unequal distributionFor designs requiring a small difference in optical power between the two branches.
70/30Unequal distribution with a stronger primary branchFor links where one branch is designed to receive a clearly larger share of the available power.
80/20Strongly unequal distributionFor designs where most of the optical power needs to remain on the primary branch.

For unequal-ratio versions, the higher-power and lower-power output legs should be identified in the approved configuration so the branch assignment remains clear during installation and testing.

When requesting a quotation, specify the required ratio and identify the intended high-power and low-power branches for unequal configurations. Operating wavelength, pigtail details and defined optical acceptance limits should be included in the same specification so the finished coupler can be reviewed against the actual project requirement.
