1. What is the difference between single mode and multimode fiber?
Single mode fiber uses a much smaller optical core and is normally selected for longer-distance, telecom, FTTH and backbone networks. Multimode fiber has a larger core and is commonly used for shorter links in buildings and data centers. The correct choice also depends on the transceiver, network speed and required link distance.
2. What is the difference between indoor and outdoor fiber optic cable?
Indoor and outdoor cables may contain the same optical fiber but use different cable constructions. Indoor designs focus on building routing, termination and applicable flame or smoke requirements. Outdoor designs normally require additional protection against moisture, UV exposure, temperature changes and installation loads.
3. How many fibers should I order in a fiber optic cable?
Start with the number of active links, then consider redundancy and realistic future expansion. The correct fiber count also depends on the network architecture, available duct or tray space, splice plan and distribution hardware. Ordering the highest possible fiber count is not always the most practical solution.
4. When should armored fiber optic cable be used?
Armored cable is considered where additional mechanical protection is required, such as higher crush risk, rodent exposure, industrial environments or some direct-burial installations. Armor is a construction feature rather than a guarantee that a cable is suitable for every outdoor or underground application.
5. What is the difference between aerial, duct and direct-buried fiber cable?
These terms describe installation methods. Aerial cable is installed above ground between support points. Duct cable is pulled or installed inside conduit or duct. Direct-buried cable is placed directly in the ground and must be designed for that environment. Each method creates different mechanical and environmental requirements.
6. When should ADSS fiber optic cable be used?
ADSS, or All-Dielectric Self-Supporting cable, is designed for appropriate aerial installations where a self-supporting, non-metallic cable is required. Selection must consider span length, tensile load, environmental conditions and the support structure. Not every aerial project automatically requires ADSS.
7. Why is minimum bend radius important for fiber optic cable?
Bending fiber optic cable more tightly than its specified limit can increase optical loss and may damage the cable or fibers. Bend limits can also differ between installation under tension and the final installed condition. Always follow the specification for the exact cable being installed.
8. What information should I provide when requesting a fiber optic cable quote?
Provide the installation environment, route length, installation method, single mode or multimode requirement, fiber count, jacket or fire-rating requirement, armor or all-dielectric requirement, mechanical specifications, preferred reel length and any termination requirements. The more clearly the route is defined, the easier it is to select the correct cable construction.
